The cryptatrope is an original 3D-printed device that reveals hidden animations and messages using only geometry, motion, and light. Your journey unfolds across three chapters, beginning with printing the base device and decoding a message sent from the past.
Each recovered secret unlocks the next set of files, revealing new optical upgrades and deeper layers of the story. By the end, you will have built a collection of three naked-eye illusions, culminating in a stereoscopic 3D “mechanical hologram.”

The Situation
Mike is trapped in the year 1503. To ensure his return, while keeping his time travel secrets from being revealed too soon, he invented a device with a message that could only be decoded once 3D printing technology existed. The blueprints are now in your hands.
Print → Decode → Advance
Print the base device. Spin it. Look through it. Decode and transmit the message through the web portal to unlock the next chapter’s downloads. Each step reveals more intricate designs and new pieces of the story.
Collect Tokens
Complete each chapter to unlock a commemorative token, including a special MakerChip at the end of the full adventure. Display these optional prints in the deluxe stand or relic holder as a record of your progress.
A Conversation Starter
Unlock a bonus planetary cryptatrope at the end of the adventure. With no text or instructions, it becomes a pure visual artifact to spark the curiosity of any visitors.
How to Play
1. Get the model files
- Back the project on MakerWorld to access Chapter 1.
- Watch the video and download the first set of models.
2. Print, assemble, and decode
- Print and assemble the model.
- Follow the viewing instructions in Chapter 1 to reveal the hidden message.
3. Upload the message to unlock subsequent storylines
- Enter the decoded message at a dedicated web portal in Chapter 1 to unlock the next stage of the adventure.
- Repeat the process to continue through all three chapters, each with its own video and model files to download.
